History

Canterbury Choughs Cricket Club has been established in the Canterbury area for nearly 40 years. The clubs generic history was established back in the 1960s when a group of local cricketers broke away from long established Thanington Cricket Club and formed Canterbury Choughs (a Chough, pronounced chuff, is a bird and features on the City of Canterbury shield), playing traditional local 'friendly' cricket under the Chairmanship of the late Doug Brown (Hampshire CC).

Doug's guidance and knowledge was passed on to many hundreds of local cricketers, some of whom are still playing today. This era of friendly 'cavalier' cricket is alas a thing of the past, as the 80s progressed players wanted to emulate their televised heroes and play 'league' cricket.

With the sad loss of Doug and his founder members standing down from the playing list, Choughs migrated into a youth side, guided by the Peter Pan of sport, Eric Croucher.

The Chough (pronounced chuff) is the bird on the Canterbury City Shield and adopted by the club to signify the competitive district and catchment area of its players. The Chough (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax) Once a common bird throughout the UK has become a restricted resident mainly found in West Wales and West Ireland

Eric Croucher, founder member
Eric Croucher, founder member Eric was responsible not only for teaching half the population of Canterbury (Archbishops C of E and St Dunstans Schools) but encouraging generations of young boys (including a large proportion of the present Choughs side) to take the big step into the adult game. If any body has witnessed the guile of Eric's spin and warmth of his sportsmanship, they remain inspired to this day. It is worth noting that Eric, at "sixty some thing" is still playing the occasional game and as recently as last season took 4 wickets. It was over this embryonic period that the club called Choughs playing at the Kingsmead ground Canterbury and adopted the area name.

Many of that original Kingsmead side play today and a handful are from that original Choughs side that played traditional weekend friendlies in the 70s. Today, Choughs play Brett League and Friendlies.

Canterbury Choughs Cricket Club is a friendly, sociable group of local cricketers, keen to promote youth, sportsmanship and good relationships with other clubs in the name of the game, cricket
